heya,
i don't know why but last weekend after hearing some DD track on youtube, i felt the sudden urge to play some DeathDrome. So i quickly tried to set it up in Win7. Sadly i got no result (just like last year but i already forgot about that)
Anyway, this time i didn't wanna quit trying too fast and after one day of struggling with some work-arounds, i got it up and running on win7. What i didn't expect was that i even got to play an online game on Kali! It'll even work if you use Linux or Win vista etc
wooot
For anyone who wants to play single game or try online, you can get it running through VirtualBox where you can set up a virtual HDD and install Win XP. You don't need to dual-boot or change anything in your OS or HDD, you can all do it within the VirtualBox proggy!
What do you need: VirtualBox, DeathDrome full or demo, Windows XP iso or DVD (these are all free, see the links below how to get em)
How to do it? After installing VirtualBox, make a virtual drive of like 10GB and tune the video card and memory options, it's pretty self-explanatory. Then just install WinXP on your virtual drive by starting the virtual HDD while mounting the WinXP iso or using the WinXP DVD (you can use an old XP CD if you're a collector ). Although installing XP takes some time like 25 mins, just like you'd set it up on a new pc.
Now you have a setup with WinXP on a virtual drive that you can run with VirtualBox. In WinXP you can just go online to download the DD install files or use an USB stick to transfer the files into XP.
From there on you can play the demo, full or Heat Deathdrome version. (When trying to launch full DD, for people with an AMD cpu, just use the cracked starter and for the Intel users there's also a cracked starter so you can skip the 'insert your CD' thingy for full version)
If you wanna go online, go to kali.net and get the browser. In Kali, head to the Death Drome clan server or just start a game in the DD lobby because it should auto-recognise full DD.
Have some old-time fun!
links for all files you need:
1) DeathDrome full version is still up at www.abandonia.com/en/games/30667/Death+Drome.html (the download button is 'GET IT!')
(i can mail you Heat DD version, for which you don't need an amd cpu fix but it's only single player)
2) www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
3) get a Windows XP iso file at any torrent site (i got the 'Windows XP Professional SP3 Integrated January 2012 (32-bit) + SATA Drivers' or any bootable iso of XP should do, so you can install it on Virtualbox)
4) to play DD online www.kali.net/ (after you got the browser, just register at the site for a free serial)

Welcome back old friend, long time no see
I've been lurking around occasionally, but it's been a while since we had much activity. Great post. You can probably use less GB though (i think the min for xp is 2 GB).
I'm about to do an update at the DD2 project site soon. I'll go ahead and tell you that it's not nearly ready though, but moving along once again. I'll be posting a few screenshots.
I'll see if I can get kali working and join you.
-Edit: I can't seem to connect to kali. Checked the tracker address and it's correct according to the site.

hey Clone, so nice to hear from you again. it's been a while since it wasn't possible to get DD working with win7 and stuff. I'm just glad some people will be able to give DeathDrome another go, even on a monster pc ;D
I've posted some info about this at the youtube DD video and made a small facebook fan page, so at least some people will notice it's playable once again.
Did i hear you good about an upcoming update for the DD2 project? Woohoo that's just great news man. I was still peeping once in while to see if anything had advanced but since most lost contact, i didn't wanna bother you with it. Just let me know if i can do anything for like level design and making maps for it, i'd be prepared to give it a good shot.
About connecting to kali.net, just fill in 'tracker.kali.net:2213' instead of 'tracker.kali.net' at the tracker adress in the advanced settings tab. Although it alread states port=2213, you still need to change that for it to work.
Take care mate and hope to hear from ya again.

Thank you for the registration approval! Until sometime last year, I hadn't played Death Drome since the days of Windows 95 when I got the demo on a Win95 games sampler. This is gonna be good.

Hey gigas, good to see another player return.
@sleeperut - Thanks for pointing that out. It worked and I've been checking to see if anyone was on there. I'll probably be on kali most of the weekend

It has been about 7 years since I last checked in on this. Great to see that things are still going. It's great to see some old familiar faces still around as well. I will install this as soon as I have some free time and hope to see some people maybe online. I also noticed that you're working on death drome 2, that is really great. I simply never had the time, knowledge or means to get around to picking up the project myself. Great to know it is still around and kicking.

The telenet link seems to be dead now. I found a copy of Death Drome at abandonia instead: www.abandonia.com/en/games/30667/.html
Instead of getting Windows XP through VirtualBox, I used XP Mode in Windows 7 Pro. Using the copy I got from Abandonia and the non-Intel crack, I was able to run the .exe. But, when I started the actual game, the window would disappear and leave the process running in the background.
Not sure how to fix this or if I did something wrong, but maybe someone else knows another way of making this game work.

I've been trying out ways to get the game running natively in Windows 7 x64 (so one wouldn't need to use an emulator).
The installer won't run at all in Windows 7, but you can copy an completed install from an old computer and it wouldn't need a reinstall in order to run, though I did have to apply the AMD patch.
At this point the game will launch to the main menu, but will crash when you try to launch a game, this is caused by modern versions of DirectX not being compatible with DirectDraw, which most Windows 95 games used, but I found a solution for this issue - at bitpatch.com you can download a DirectDraw Wrapper, which when configured properly will make that part work, it's available at bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html .
You need to put ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg in the DDROME\RUN folder and edit aqrit.cfg like this:
;;; www.bitpatch.com ;;;
RealDDrawPath = AUTO
BltMirror = 0
BltNoTearing = 0
ColorFix = 1
DisableHighDpiScaling = 0
FakeVsync = 1
FakeVsyncInterval = 1
ForceBltNoTearing = 0
ForceDirectDrawEmulation = 1
NoVideoMemory = 0
SingleProcAffinity = 1
ShowFPS = 0
Now you'll be able to launch the game, but three very major issues remain, which I still haven't been able to solve - first, it doesn't play any audio, second the controls are incredibly unresponsive, and the worst issue of all - the speed is incredibly unstable and the game will crash after about a minute of play. I've tried changing processor affinity in the Task Manager, since multicore processors seem to cause some similar issues in other games, but that hasn't solved the issue. The way the game behaves is like it's buffering up a series of events, being unresponsive for a few seconds, then playing all of them out at way too high speed after that, and then going back to catching up on what happens next, and so on until it crashes.
Pretty annoying to come this close to running the game natively, would be great if we could find a solution for this. I guess we'd need to find a wrapper for the old version of DirectSound to get the sound to work, as for the speed issue I wonder if there may be any per-process slowdown utilities available, I remember programs like that being a thing in the late DOS days to run pre-386 games on Pentiums, but I'm not sure any such programs exist to adjust the speed of Windows programs.

Thank for pointing out about the broken download link, DD Heat version won't be available anymore but i can still mail it if you want it. It's only single player but you don't need a fix for AMD cpu's.
I'm wondering if someone tried DD on a Windows 8? Probably it's the same story as with Win7... and the emulator takes little effort but like 30mins to install. Best scenario is just to make it quickly run on a modern OS and play a quick game but no luck so far. Thanks for the efforts from fisk0, he's been closest to a solution.
Just thinking out loud, in the end I reckon that old DOS games like DD will be only available on 'emulators' a bit like the old roms from Arcade machines, Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Amiga commodore 64 etc. It's just so much fun to play DD for a short time and even some online games for old time's sake. About the DD remakes, I'm afraid they died peacefully.
On the DD Facebook page, there was some news from the original DD development team Zipper Interactive to start a hype for a DD remake, for PC or possibly for the Oculus Rift (virtual reality glasses), but the interest was pretty low so far. DD never got ported to Steam for instance, games like Duke Nukem 3D, Heretic, Blood, Rise of the Triad etc which are nowadays available again for online play on all platforms with Steam support.
Games like Turok or Kingpin were kept alive by using a gamespy server browser or even Medal of Honor Alied Assault you can still play with the Original ingames browser. Anyway for DeathDrome the Heat netcode/sourcecode was never released and after Heat.net died, the people who wanted to make independant servers for it couldn't fix this.
As DD Heat version was tuned perfectly for online play. So far there's no hope for a HD remake or to make the original available through a network like Steam For DD you need to plow through 'abondoned' networks or servers to find full game and play it single or multi, but at least it's still possible. Enjoy the game in single player for half an hour or do the 'not so sexy' emulator and Kali.net workaround for online play, have phun!

I discovered the DirectDraw wrapper by looking at how GOG.com had solved similar issues with games they were selling (the wrapper was used for their release of 7th Legion, a game that was unplayable on everything after Windows 98 due to the old DirectDraw code). I hope they'll put out more old Windows 95 games there soon, of course a GOG release of DeathDrome would be great, but if they just release something else that was created during the same era of early Win95 games (I think Fury3 or some of the Jane's combat simulator games could be good contenders), I'd just have to find out how they made the game work, and then try to apply the same method to DeathDrome.
