With my recent findings of personal abilities to resurect old things *cough* Lobby *cough*. I have been thinking about making a DDII. Now basically this is the absolute beginning stages of my goal. I want to do something with updated graphics and a few more features to add to the game, which I will be discussing in this thread. Some of you may or may not know I will be attending college in the Fall be majoring in Level and Art Design, essentially Game Design with all the courses I will be taking. One of the projects is to make a game or a demo for a game of your own. If you put 2 and 2 together you can see where a sequel to DD ties in. So just a heads up this could take anywhere from 2 years to 4 years to accomplish. But I promise you that I will post frequent updates and pictues and demos and videos, whatever it may be. So, here are the goals and to-do list - Obtain rights to DD from Brian Soderberg, might need some help on this one
- program new AI for more fun single player
- add voice chat
- ability to hold 5 weapons instead of 3
- primary weapons laser/barrier and 1 new one, Temporary flight
- Secondary weapons include nitro ram, skorch missile, shockwave, distruptor(increase to 10sec), Ion Sword, Nano Shield(incrase to 10sec) 1 new weapon Napalm - fire weapon.
- Other items include Health Orbs, Life Credits, Color Keys and 1 new cloaking device(30sec)
- All returning runners +4 (Brown, Black, Gold, Silver) This increases maximum players from 8 to 12
- all returning levels +2(The Tower, Neo Centauri)
- support player designed levels
- chat lobby (in the works)
- more modes of gameplay (CTF/DM/TDM/VIP etc.)
- Team abilities for clan matches etc
- Game stats (most kills/highest score/most deaths etc)
- Outdoor levels/areas
- Mounted Weapons
- Special attributes/abilities - runner specific
My basic things are, overhaul the graphics, support voice chat, increase maximum players online, and the chat lobby. All of this stuff will be discussed with people so that I know what I will need to do. Please share your opinions on this as it will not only bring a sequel for this game but probably get me a passing grade. In the event that Mr. Soderberg does not or cannot sell me the rights to DeathDrome the game will simply go under a different label and we will have to think of new names for the levels/runners etc. As of now this will be called ProjectPrisoner. Thanks in advance for future help/opinions. -WOLFSting

Getting a degree in game design would be nice. It's one of the few things that interests me when it comes to a career, mostly that or being a cartoonist. I would want to go to work for Retro Studios probably. It's owned by Nintendo and located here in Texas, in Austin. About dd2, I had a feeling this was gonna be brought up, heh. I've been thinking about it for a while, except i was thinking about doing it without permission, since the game has been abandoned for so long. I know you couldnt do that if it's part of a college project of course. One thing that would help speed up the process is using an engine that's already been made, if you're allowed to do that. I know of a really nice free one in c++ that i just started using recently. Has things for graphics, input, etc. That way you can concentrate more on the things directly related to the game. It even has a feature to load quake 3 maps, so someone could make a game, then maybe use a quake 3 editor to make levels. Of course, if you manage to get the rights to the game, im guessing the source code will come with it and maybe you would work with that. If you're gonna go from scratch you could start sooner though. Btw, nice project name. -Clone

Well, I have not 100% decided on anything yet but I do hope to obtain the rights to the game soon but first I think I have to establish my company. So it would probably have to be from scratch but with the basic concepts in mind. It is alot of hard work but it would be owned by myself/my company.
As for a game engine, which one are you referring to? Lately I have been thinking about the Torque engine which is what Tribes 2 runs off of. It is just the perfect graphics setting that I had in mind. I mean if we want to go all out I am sure I can buy a copy of the DOOM III engine but that would probably be up in the $500 range and I am not 100% sure if it is even out for sale. But Torque is about $100 it is a bit dated but it is a great engine.
Clone, I looked at some of your artwork and I found it to be really good. Would you be interested in working on some concept art with me for this? I am not an artist but I do have a lot of ideas that would be awesome to implement.
Where is everyone else on this subject? I thought there would be atleast 10 posts on this already. Please post your opinions and what things you would like to see brought to this game.

Thanks. Yeah, i'd be interested in that. The engine i was talking about is called the Irrlicht engine, irrlicht.sourceforge.net/index.html. I also forgot to mention that it's cross-platform, like torque. The graphics might be about the same, but torque does have the world editor and networking. You could use add-ons for that with irrlicht though. I just thought you might want to check it out. -Clone

That looks awesome, graphics look much better than torque does IMO. I will look into it more thanks for the link.
As for the conceptual art. Would you like to start with a runner? Or what woud you suggest or feel most comfortable doing?
Unfortunately I don't have any screen shots with me so if we start this it would have to be tomorrow, I will remember to bring the game with me to work. heh. But if you like go ahead and start whatever you want and we can review it tomorrow.

I guess a runner is a good place to start, whatever you think would be the best place to start though. I'll just wait. I dont think i have much time to do anything today anyway. Also, some things that i think would be good in this game: - More modes of gameplay, like ctf, capture and hold, maybe even some unique ones
- ability to choose teams of course
- game stats, like other player's score
- maybe some outdoor levels, prisons do have outdoor areas
Btw, if you guys are out there, you should voice your opinions or at least show a little support. Someone taking on a project like this could use it. I'm sure it would be appreciated. -Clone

Okay I added your ideas to the main post. So I will probably sit down tonight and ponder up some ideas maybe draw out a sketch of what I am thinking but don't have a scanner to host it here I will make an attempt to recreate it in paint though. I will leave the fixin' up to you clone. I think a runner is a good place to start along with a GUI. I would say if we get a screen shot and just recreate it in the 3D model enviroment we could get a good general idea of what needs to be done for the rest of it. So tomorrow I will post a SS and we can work on it piece by piece and post the pictures of what we come up with so people can see. Then just add them in so we kind of get a before and after shot. I bet that would get more people interested. I don't normally get a chance to mess around with the computer on weekends so if you don't hear from me then I am just busy with RL, I will return Monday. -wolfy

You aren't wrong man. I was a pain in the ass and I did bug people. But, I think it was just part of my young age and immaturity back then. I would say I have changed alot since HEAT and DD, hopefully I can show you all that. Really I have always considered all the DD players friends even if I screwed around and what not. DDII will be made but I need opinions and ideas. Last night I thought of another game mod called VIP. I don't want to post the ideas right now but I will add it to the list. Stunner you might have better luck getting people back here to read this thread than I did. Can you do your thing? Clone I forgot the CD at home but let me see what I can dig up. I am sure I can find an old screen shot of DD with the waybackmachine. -wolfy

Okay so here is the SS I found. It is a little small but we can resize it. So what I am thinking is recreate this picture as more 3d and realistic. Like I said before I would like to get a before and after picture and from there I could get a general idea of what I can work with. Fortunately Graphic Design will be the first course I take once I start college. Clone if you would like to get in on this project as a partner that would be awesome. No money in it (yet) but there will be someday. It would really help relieve the stress of somethings for me. But if you just want to help out here and there that is fine too. Okay ideas. leave all the stuff the same like leave the runner pruple but add in maybe make it look reflective. I think if we alter the design of the runner to be more rounded and futuristic looking. Right now I have the motorcycle from IRobot, in mind. Did you see that movie? If now I can get a picture for you. Lets see, what else....We could alter the laser blaster so it actually stands out as a mounted weapon. That's all I can really think of right now, I am sure I will get more ideas throughout the day. Feel free to add in anything you think of also. -wolfy

About the project, sure, i'm in. I found pictures of the motorcycle from irobot on the internet. It's called the MV Agusta F4. If you enter that into a search engine you should probably find plenty of pictures. I only found one picture of the one actually used in the movie though. Also, maybe we should make all weapons as mounted weapons you can actually see. I'm not sure if thats what you had in mind, but might be nice. That's if there's enough room on the runner and if it looked nice. One idea i had that's kind of related to this is that when a disrupter hits a runner, it would still do what it did before, but maybe we could add an effect of electricity flowing along the runner (like its electrical systems have been shorted out). Some other things to add maybe: show damage on the runner like being banged up, have it smoke after a certain amount of damage, catch on fire after being shot, etc. It might also be nice if missiles left behind some kind of trail, add marks to the walls where they get hit, etc. Not that any of those things are important, just something i felt like talking about. There's definitely room for improvement when it comes to the special effects. -Clone

Yea I like those ideas. I will add those to the list later. I can't talk too much right now because I am getting ready to head out for the weekend but I will try to ponder up some ideas and post them. I will also work on establishing my company this weekend also. Although I will need my fathers help in doing so but just keep and eye out for it. Also, I am considering scrapping the lobby and starting from scratch that way it there won't be any possible legal issues. All this means is that the graphics and general layout would change, this might push it back a little bit more but it would be alot better than getting slammed with a law suit from sega. In response to the mounted weapons. I think this is a good idea but are you suggesting like "socket areas" for this or just throwing the shockwave on it? I will look at that motorcycle in a bit just to make sure it is the one I am thinking of btw. Welcome to Extreme Industries clone. -wolfy Okay that wasn't quite what I had in mind but something more like this that is closed all around. You know what I am saying? www.bikemenu.com/photos/concepts/bmwconcept001.jpgwww.bikemenu.com/photos/dodgetomahawk/027.jpg

I thought you were saying closed all around, but kind of like that irobot motorcycle in style or something like that. I like the bmw, it looks cool, but not the dodge.
The bmw looks like something i saw on tv a few years ago. It was a show about new technology. I think the one i saw had these things that came out from the sides near the bottom when it turned to help balance it, at least at slow speeds. That one is even the same color i think.
By socket areas do you mean mounts you can see on the car all the time, even when no weapon is equipped? I was just thinking it would be kind of like Vigilante 8, if you don't have any weapons the car looks normal.
Another idea i had was having the weapons actually come out of the vehicle when they're picked up, like out of a place that opens up, and play a sound.
It's like a wirrr sound as the weapon comes out, then a clicking sound, or maybe have some others besides clicking for different weapons, like a power-up energy kind of sound, etc.
That idea would take more work than just sticking them on there of course, but i dont think ive seen it in any games. It's just a cooler way of mounting them.

yeah ddII isnt a great idea, and knowing how much time & effort it would take, i'm 100% behind you (in support, and ability) on this task. This game NEEDS alot more playability, a new version could offer that. i look forward to seeing what you have to offer.
